📌 Background

In 2021, the Government of Kenya engaged Champion Engineering Ltd to enhance water storage capacity and improve water distribution infrastructure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the busiest aviation hub in East Africa.

The airport required high-capacity water storage solutions to support critical operations, safety requirements, and passenger services. The mandate was to design, fabricate, and install steel water tanks on elevated towers, complete with reinforced concrete foundations.

Champion Engineering Ltd was tasked to deliver a project that combined structural precision, durability, and reliability within strict timelines.

🚧 Scope of Work

The project comprised the following key components:

Construction of Reinforced Concrete Foundations

    • Excavation, formwork, reinforcement, and casting of heavy-duty foundations.
    • Designed to withstand dynamic loads of both 100m³ and 50m³ elevated steel tanks.
    • Precision leveling to ensure structural stability and vertical alignment of towers.

Fabrication and Installation of Two (2) Units – 100m³ Steel Tanks on 15-Meter-High Towers

    • Each tank with a 100,000-litre (100m³) capacity.
    • 15-meter-high lattice towers fabricated from high-strength steel sections.
    • Towers hot-dip galvanized and painted to resist corrosion in Nairobi’s semi-humid climate.
    • Tanks assembled with welded panels, anti-rust coatings, and internal linings for potable water.

Fabrication and Installation of Three (3) Units – 50m³ Steel Tanks on 12-Meter-High Towers

    • Each tank with a 50,000-litre (50m³) capacity.
    • 12-meter-high towers engineered for stability and long service life.
    • Installed on cast concrete bases, with structural bracing to resist wind and seismic loads.
    • Fitted with inlet, outlet, overflow, and access ladders for operational safety.

🔨 Execution Process

Phase 1: Site Preparation & Foundations

  • Conducted soil tests to determine bearing capacity.
  • Constructed reinforced concrete foundations, ensuring proper curing and structural integrity.

Phase 2: Steel Fabrication

  • Towers and tanks fabricated at Champion Engineering Ltd’s workshop.
  • Components precision-cut, welded, and pre-treated with anti-corrosive finishes.

Phase 3: Tower & Tank Installation

  • Towers erected on foundations using cranes and hydraulic lifts.
  • Tanks assembled on-site in modular panels and welded into position.
  • Quality checks performed at every stage, including non-destructive weld testing.

Phase 4: Commissioning & Handover

  • Systems pressure-tested for leaks and structural soundness.
  • Final inspection conducted jointly with Government representatives before handover.
