Furaha Centre Water & Solar Project
This project delivers a reliable, solar-powered water system designed for long-term efficiency. By leveraging renewable energy, we’ve reduced operational costs while securing a vital resource for the community’s children and their guardians.
Client: Furaha Centre (NGO)
Location: Meru County, Kenya
Completion Date: October 2021
š Background
In October 2021, Furaha Centre, an independent non-governmental organization in Meru County, Kenya, engaged Champion Engineering Ltd to implement a sustainable water and solar solution.
Furaha Centre provides rehabilitation, care, and education for children with special needs, especially those living with cerebral palsy. The Centre faced a critical challenge: limited access to safe, reliable water. They needed a system that could support daily use, food production for the children, and also serve the neighboring community.
The projectās mission was to deliver a dependable water supply powered by renewable energy, reducing long-term costs while improving the well-being of the children and their caregivers.

š ļø Scope of Work
š§Borehole Drilling
- Conducted a hydrogeological survey to determine aquifer depth and drilling site.
- Drilled the borehole using rotary rigs, stabilized with steel casing, screens, and gravel packing.
- Performed test pumping and development to confirm yield, drawdown, and water quality.
ā Result: A strong and reliable groundwater source to sustain Furaha Centreās growing needs.
āļøInstallation of Borehole Pump
- Installed a high-capacity submersible pump matched to the boreholeās depth and expected output.
- Secured the system with stainless steel riser pipes, power cabling, and safety ropes.
- Integrated pump controllers and dry-run protection for safe, efficient operation.
ā Result: Smooth and reliable lifting of water from borehole to surface.
āļøSolarization of Pumping System
- Designed and installed a solar PV array sized to match the pumpās load demand.
- Deployed high-efficiency solar panels, inverter, and charge controller for dependable performance.
- Automated control system allowed pumping to operate seamlessly with solar availability.
ā Result: 100% renewable, off-grid pumping solution with no recurring electricity costs.

šSolar Panel Array & Burglar-Proof Fencing
- Mounted solar panels on galvanized steel frames, engineered for durability in local weather conditions.
- Installed a burglar-proof fence enclosure with lockable access to secure the solar assets.
- Added surge protection and grounding for electrical safety.
ā Result: Safe, protected, and long-lasting renewable energy system.
šPiping & Distribution Network
- Installed HDPE pipelines connecting the borehole pump, elevated storage tank, and Furaha Centreās distribution points.
- Extended piping to serve both the Centre and surrounding community taps.
- Pressure-tested and commissioned the system for efficiency and durability.
ā Result: Seamless and reliable conveyance of water across the Centre and to external beneficiaries.
š¢ļøFabrication & Installation of 54,000-Litre Steel Tank on 12-Meter Tower
- Tank Fabrication: Engineered and fabricated a 54,000-litre steel water tank, coated with anti-corrosive lining for longevity.
- Foundation Works: Constructed a reinforced concrete base designed to withstand heavy loads.
- Tower Construction: Built a 12-meter-high steel tower engineered for wind, seismic, and dynamic water loads.
- Installation: Safely hoisted the tank, secured with ladders, handrails, inlet/outlet pipes, and overflow systems.
ā Result: Stable elevated storage ensuring consistent gravity-fed water pressure.

š Project Impact
- Children with Special Needs: The project directly improved the lives of children with cerebral palsy by ensuring access to safe, clean water for drinking, sanitation, and food preparation.
- Nutrition & Irrigation: Although Furaha Centre independently set up their own irrigation system, the water infrastructure supplied by Champion Engineering Ltd enabled food production for the childrenās nutritional needs.
- Community Access: Neighboring households gained access to safe water, reducing reliance on unsafe sources and improving public health.
- Sustainability: Solarization made the system cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
- Longevity: The 54,000-litre elevated tank and robust infrastructure guaranteed long-term reliability.
⨠Conclusion
Through borehole drilling, solarized pumping, secure solar systems, robust piping, and elevated steel tank storage, the project delivered sustainable water access that is now transforming lives ā particularly for vulnerable children with special needs and their surrounding community.
